NEW ARTISTS CHECK-IN TO ARTIST LOFT SUITES AT THE OLD NO. 77 HOTEL & CHANDLERY
New Orleans artists Tish Douzart and Saegan Swanson are latest to curate Artist Loft Suites with original works at historic warehouse hotel

May 1, 2017- NEW ORLEANS, La. - Since opening in 2015, the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery - a historic art-centric hotel in New Orleans' Warehouse Art District - has partnered with Where Y'Art - a community of local art lovers and cultivators of emerging artists - for collaborative exhibitions that take place both at the hotel and at the Where Y'Art gallery on Royal Street in the Marigny. In January, the hotel debuted three Artist Loft Suites, each personally crafted by a local artist with décor and accessories to compliment the original works of art selected for the space. Where Y'Art artists Leroy Miranda, Jr., Kate Hanrahan and Connor McManus debuted as the first trio of artists to curate the suites at the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery. Now, taking over the suites crafted by Hanrahan and McManus, Tish Douzart and Saegan Swanson are the newest Where Y'Art artists to rotate into the Artist Loft Suites in the Warehouse District, imbuing the historic accommodations with original works that exemplify their unique creative styles.

A native of Northern California who migrated South to New Orleans in 2013, Saegan Swanson grew up with a passion for art in its variety of forms - from drawing and painting to ceramics and modern dance. Upon arriving in New Orleans, Swanson has channeled her time and inspiration drawn from the Crescent City into her fascination with painting, producing an astounding collection of figurative paintings that turn to photographs as source images for her body of work. Depicting subjects who are both personal acquaintances and anonymous strangers found in old photo albums discovered at flea markets, Swanson's Artist Loft Suite marks her second showing at the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery, following her first group exhibition during Fairer Sex, Set One at the hotel in August 2016. In her Artist Loft Suite, travelers will discover works such as "Boat Man on the Ganges River, Varanasi Ghats", an oil painting on wood panel, framed in reclaimed heart pine; "Swamp Goddess", an oil and metal leaf painting on a canvas wrapped wood panel; "Naomi - Holocaust Memorial, Berlin" and "Chrissie in Kreuzberg", both oil paintings produced on wood panels and framed in reclaimed plaster lath.

Likening her creative process to meditation and a time for self-examination, Tish Douzart is a printmaker and multidisciplinary artist working primarily in traditional, hand-pulled prints and paper marbling. Cherishing the process of her craft and the smell of an old-fashioned print shop, Douzart's works are both vibrant and evolving as she experiments with mixed media and encaustic techniques, drawing inspiration from both natural surroundings and cosmic bodies that yield an ephemeral body of work. Abstract marbled monotype prints such as "Light in Lavender" and "Biologique" are displayed in her Artist Loft Suite as are mixed media works produced from wax, marbled paper and metal leafing that comprise her "Little Universes" series, of which the individual pieces remain untitled, allowing the art collector to name the piece themselves - just as one would name a star.
Born and raised in New Orleans and the adjacent countryside, Leroy Miranda, Jr. is a self-taught artist that focuses on capturing a diverse array of inspiration from his own life-story and his experiences in New Orleans and the surrounding nature of South Louisiana. He considers his work to be natural, somewhat primal and flowing instinctively in the moment, rather than arising from a planned process,
and prefers to refer to his mediums as "love, care, joy and paint." Miranda explores the themes of culture and identity in works that can be found in over a dozen private collections and the L.S.U. University Medical Center public collection. In January 2015, Where Y'art curated a solo show of his work at their gallery and in the gallery at the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery. Miranda's Artist Loft Suite features two-dimensional paintings one of which, "General Zod," is a companion piece to "King Pin," a sculpture, that are a visceral interpretation of the unknown and a message of self-discovery. Miranda was among the original trio of artists to debut the Artist Loft Suites at the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery and will continue to rotate new works through the space this summer.
Guests who stay in the Artist Loft Suites at the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery are immersed in that artist's vision. During their stay, travelers can enjoy the art and when they check out, if they have a favorite piece, they can purchase it and take it home. When guests purchase a work from one of the hotel's Artist Loft Suites, the artist will replace it with a new work so these suites will evolve and change with time.
